# Winter season on land in Varna

## Wednesday 2025-12-31 - (Istanbul)

Arrived to the IST airport around 20:30 or perhaps 21:30?

I was offline most of the evening, as the costs for using my regular phone operator in Turkey is crazy high.

Found my way to the metro without too much problems, but it was surprisingly far to walk. First one has to make some extra rounds on the airport to get from the arrivals to the passport control and/or extra security controls for connecting flights. In the passport control the queue itself was not so long (but very few desks in operation, so it took long time) - still they had put up the ribbons so that it was needed to go forth and back and forth and back some 4-5 times. I'd cheat and cross through the barriers if it wasn't for the lady in front of me walking all the way. Next, the walking distance to the metro was surprisingly long. The airport is relatively new, they for sure planned it to be accessible by metro when they built it even if the metro line was finished some few years later. Why have a 5-10 minutes walk from the airport to the metro? Couldn't they have planned it a bit closer? Well, there was rolling walkways parts of the way - but not all the way, just small pieces of it (and quite slow, of course). Then, coming to the metro it was quite deep. Instead of having one long escalator going in the "correct" direction(s) (like we have i.e. on Nationalteateret in Oslo), there escalators were zig-zagging. Instead of having them zig-zag in such a way that one can exit one escalator, turn 180 degrees and continue directly on the next, they had all the excalators going in the same direction, forcing people to walk all the way "back" to the next elevator - three times IIRC. That's how it's done in some shopping centers where they are optimizing for potential customers to pass as many shops as possible. Metro exchanges in Istanbul was equally bad. I don't mind walking, but I'd like to do my walking in Istanbul, not in the airport area or metro system.

Like in Oslo it's difficult to navigate when not being a local. The navigation signs and marking of the metro is done by end-station. Meaning that there are no signs saying "to Istanbul", one needs to know that Gayretteppe is the right destination. (at least it's quite central - for anyone that knows Istanbul it's obviously the correct way. For other lines it may be worse, as the end station is out in the suburbs at the other side of Istanbul - just like in Oslo). There was one information tablet with a map of the public transport system, but some other people were watching it, I decided to pass it. I did have some offline maps with some of the transport system in it, so while sitting in the metro train I realized it would be difficult to get to Kadiköy.

I did a rather suboptimal round to get to Kadiköy. First M11, then I jumped on the M7 line westwards for only two stops, tram T5 south, walked across the Galata bridge, went for some rounds (but not all the way to the Taskim square) before I returned over the bridge, took the train to Uskudar and walked to Kadiköy.

On the Galata bridge preparations were underway to prepare for big crowds - crowd control fences had been put up, extra mobile cellphone basestations with diesel-powered power generations rolled out, bridge closed for car traffic with lots of police cars and special vehicles. I should probably have continued walking to the maksim square and back again, and met the new year at Galata/Maksim. It was a bit party atmosphere at Galata.

Several persons were approaching me due to my outfit, wanting selfies with me in the background. A random incident, I had a red fleece jacket (that's my regular winter jacket), a red trouser (I had a white one the day before, but then I was doing bike maintenance and it had to be washed - so I changed to the red trouser) and "nisselue" (I must have forgotten my hat at the train in Oslo - so I grabbed the first hat I found when leaving from Oslo). A greyish beard as well. I did see other people as well with similar hat, but nobody as authentic as me I suppose.

My phone was showing the wrong time zone. I thought I had good time to get to Kadiköy. When I realized it was soon midnight, I decided to meet the new year at Uskudar.

## Thursday 2026-01-01 (Istanbul) - Varna

The view of Bosphorus was very good from Uskudar, it was the maiden light house and straigt view to the Galata bridge that I had left behind, it was benches and some areas was unlit, making it the best place for watching fireworks. But the fireworks was underwhelming. Some private fireworks at the other side, starting two minutes too early, and some small fireworks behind me. I later learned the fireworks had killed too many birds, so they had decided to stop with the public fireworks.

There were many people at Uskudar, some people selling tea, some playing music, but no real party atmosphere, I saw nobody drinking alcohol. I had a full bottle of champagne in my rucksack, but nobody to share it with - so it was left unopened.

From Uskudar to Kadiköy it was a long way with industrial / car road terrain, with very few people and very little commercial activity. On my way I noticed several closed cafés, restaurants and kebab places, nothing opened. I was hungry and worrying a bit if I would find anything to eat at all.

As soon as I entered the outskirts of Kadiköy there was many open shops, and the shopowner of one of them was "throwing me in". He had wifi and was serving me a very good döner kebab. In Kadiköy it was lively and party atmosphere. I didn't feel like going straight to bed, but wandered a bit in the streets of Kadiköy. At one place there was some party people jumping and making noise, and two or three police officers trying to calm them down.

I slept on a couch, and then we made whale meat stew as a late lunch.

It started snowing.

It was snowing. Alper wanted to create my box series that would fit perfectly into the drawer, but once again the print job would take hours and be completed only after my takeoff.

Being uncertain on how much time I would spend getting to the airport I left early.

The trip with the metro bus was kind of nice. Particularly passing the Bosphorus, dressed in white.

Got too early to the airport, spent quite some time fighting to get online on the airport wifi.

Took a cab to Harrow and Indrek, dropped off the bag there, and stuffed my fridge stuff into their fridge before heading to the weekly pub meeting, this time at Cubo - still dressed in red. It was nice. I think I bought two beers using cash, and then people there bought me two more. Suddenly there were many people subscribing to my Fridays whale meat dinner.

### Expenses

* EUR 6 - transportation - Taxi from the airport to Harrow's place (estimated - I don't remember what he took!) (cash)
* EUR 6 - dining - drunk some beers - (estimated, I don't remember what I paid!) (cash)

## Friday 2026-01-02 - Varna

The plan for the day was to have a whale meat dinner - but it was also a normal working day, plus some logistical challenges as the bag with the whale meat was at Harrows place, and as I needed to buy some ingrediences for the food.

So I biked for a quick lunch, the Varna Tower was closed, so I went tothe Grand Mall - it was overcrowded and the escalators was stuck with people both up and down and I didn't find a talbe and even got lost in the mall, horrible. then to Harrow (a bit late there as always), explained I was in a hurry, but still hung around for a while, disturbing their work, forgot the meat in the fridge, went to Kaufland and forgot to buy cream. Luckily my guests managed to solve those problems.

Did a minimum-effort on cleaning and managed to get things more or less in order just before the first guests arrived. I hadn't started with the cooking though, but got help with that.

I had requested some red wine ... and four bottles of wine arrived. It was a bit of a problem getting up from bed the next day, but I survived.

### Expenses

* EUR 9.60 - dining - lunch (reconciled: N26 - 2026-01-04 - EUR:9.60)
* EUR 3.73 - dining - big cappuccino, very much needed (reconciled: N26 - 2026-01-05 - EUR:3.73)
* EUR 9.80 - groceries - Kauland visit (two entries because I decided to use two self-service checkout automats when getting stuck on one of them, third entry because I forgot butter) (reconciled: N26 - 2026-01-04 - EUR:9.80)
* EUR 4.76 - groceries - Kauland visit (reconciled: N26 - 2026-01-04 - EUR:4.76)

## Sunday 2026-01-04

* Skipped the weekly "walking event" as it was just another park walk in the Sea Garden and as I was busy with lots of other things.

It was quite a lot of wind, and every now and then the boat started to shake quite a lot. I realized I had to do something with it. https://baatplassen.no/i/topic/179827-vind-og-ressonans-i-forstagrulle/

I tried to join the social "let's talk"-event, I thought I would come only some few minutes delayed ... but I'm still a bit confused with the time zones, it started 16 local time, in my head it was starting 16 CET. Or perhaps Dan was saying 17, because Nico was also late. He passed me by car, but spent 20 minutes parking, so he came one hour and 15 minutes delayed.

### Maintenance

* Observation: when the genoa is taken down it's very important to make sure the rig has good tension and also to attach the forestay with a rope.
* Done: worked on dampening the forestay

### Expenses

* EUR 2.01 - dining - cappuccino (cash) at social event
* EUR 5.11 - dining - more coffee for me and nico at social event (reconciled: N26 - 2026-01-05 - EUR:5.11)
* EUR 0.66 - food - one tomato (reconciled: N26 - 2026-01-05 - EUR:0.66)
* EUR 14.40 - dining - "Pri Brakqta" - at 19:20. I decided to have a quick snack at the xmas market. It was a mistake - the grilled food was cold (as they had a big pile of grilled meat but very few customers), and it was very much overpriced, and it was not comfortable to eat there (one was supposed to stand by a barrel "table", but the table was too low) (reconciled: N26 - 2026-01-05 - EUR:14.40)

### Maintenance

* Done: moved the port side aft stay to the correct side of the targa cosntruction, and tightened it up
* Observation: The outer diameter of the roller is 70mm. (That's what I measured. Later I found that the 76mm hole drill did not fit around it, I had to go up to 82mm).

## Thursday 2026-01-08

Snowing during the day, enough to dress the boat in white. Frozen ground and ice every here and there on the road. 4C in the boat when I came back from the weekly CS pub meeting. 4C in the boat when returning!

### Time tracking

3C in the boat when waking up. Another pub evening, not quite good for me, but I was invited so I felt obliged to go. Too much beer.

### Time tracking

* EUR 83.51 - electricity - at least, that's what I believe it's for (reconciled: N26 - 2026-01-10 - EUR:83.51)

## Sunday 2026-01-11

5C in the boat in the morning.

I managed to get out the old rudder axis roller. It was quite difficult. I had to go with the deepest 86mm hole cutter that I could find at Praktiker, from both sides, and still when drilling all the way down it didn't want to get out easily (probably due to a millimeter gap - when measuring afterwards I found that the cup was apparently just not deep enough). The 220V driller has adjustment for speed, but when turning it down the drill easily stops and overheats. And every now and then the cup got completely stuck.

### Time tracking

## Monday 2026-01-12

### Time tracking

* Breaks (food, sleep, entertainment, etc) - 13.0h

* Personal admin tasks                       -       0.3h
* Other                                      -       0.5h

### Maintenance

* Observation: The roller is indeed a Jefa 41040. Sent an email ordering a new one. The old one should still be usable though - but I think there is space for two rollers, extending a bit up into the bed and down into the plank that is there. This will give better support, more rigidity and less water coming into the boat. The only drawback I can see is that it will not be possible to get it out using the same hole saw / cup drill from both sides.

## Tuesday 2026-01-13

Got to bed not so long after midnight (Oslo-time), first time this year that I get to bed so "early". got up a bit past 07 Oslo-time, first time this year that I get up relatively early.

It was a really cold night. I had turned off the heating some time before going to bed, so it was already cold in the saloon - but I was a bit shocked getting into the cabin. Even with two douvets, a hat (a thin one) and a buff it was still a cold night. I Woke up to 0C in the saloon. I think it's time to find some elctrical 200W-heaters - one under the bed (will both help drying wood and keeping me warm during the nights), one under the lower saloon bench (to help drying out the damaged wood there) and one under my table (to keep me comfty while I'm sitting by the laptop - should also put up the blanket to retain the heat under the table)

I spent significant parts of the day organizing the boat inventory

### Time Tracking

* Breaks (food, sleep, entertainment, etc) - 13.2h
* Chores                                     -       6.4h

* Boat maintenance etc                       -       0.7h
* Open Source contributions                  -       0.3h
* Personal projects                          -       0.0h
* Other                                      -       0.3h
### Maintenance

* Done: put heaters in the box with the leakage and under the bed to dry the wood. Sub-zero air contains almost no humidity at all and gets super-dry when heated. However, the oven I put under the bed didn't work.

### Expenses

* EUR 18.18 - groceries - Lidl (onions, kitchen paper, bananas, tomatoes, peppers, garlic, honey, mayonnaise, pork, bread) (reconciled: N26 - 2026-01-14 - EUR:18.44)

## Wednesday 2026-01-14

Late to bed, as usual ... and up relatively early. Been sleeping like 6 hours per night every night lately (and without getting very much done during the days I must say). This morning was very hard - I was considering to go back to bed again. Eventually, around 15 I went to bed - and was there for around four hours. That wasn't exactly what I needed to get my day rythm back on track.

### Time Tracking

## Thursday 2026-01-15

Thursday pub again. Had four beers and a shot of Linjeakevitt that was definitively too much for me.

The details are blurry, but I believe I managed to do some things right; leave the pub not so extremely late in the morning and go more or less directly to bed after arriving to the boat.

## Friday 2026-01-16

Got up after 11 local time, that's pretty bad - and even then I didn't feel very well.

I'm doing account reconciliations of my credit cards versus my diaries, started with 2024. It's a bit funny how I remember in details what I did in Greece in 2024, while I'm having problems remembering what I did yesterday. I should spend less time with the computer and more time travelling, probably.

Time tracking broke down due to software problems.

I stayed up all night.

## Saturday 2026-01-17

It's chilly those days. Slept for 2-3 hours in the morning. I had turned off the heat and it was quite cold in the saloon - but it was shockily cold in the aft cabin, probably sub-zero. My nose got really cold from sleeping there.

I'm searching all over the boat for the 200W heaters. I had a lot of them, most of them have been movd a bit forth and back over the last years, and haven't been used for a long time. I found two of them, but only one was working. I moved the working one under the bed - both to dry up the wood there and to gain some few degrees more in the aft cabin.

Slept again around 19 local time, but woke up before midnight, wide awake. Stayed a bit in bed trying to sleep before I gave up and got up.

## Sunday 2026-01-18

Cold, cold, cold.

Got to bed in reasonable time, but woke up in the middle of the night and felt wide awake. Got up, went to bed again just before sunrise "just for an hour", but slept long enough to oversleep from the Sunday walking event.

I thought the "chat group" was weekly, so I decided I did at least not want to miss that. On the way out of the boat I realized that the water systems had started to freeze. I put on the fan heater in the aft bathroom.

Biked downtown. It was a bad ride, not because of the cold, but because of cars and dogs. Two dogs was barking like crazy and following me on the mainroad for quite a while. I didn't really want to stop for traffic in the circle due to the angry dogs. And as if that wasn't bad enough, the traffic in the right lane would sometimes pass me really fast and close. It makes sense to get away from Varna, if I continue biking on those roads I'm sure that sooner or later I'll end up in a coffin. I almost had an accident myself by disrespecting a stop-sign. A car came from the right, so I stopped hard - but I believed it was a one-way street, so while focusing on going right after the car from the right I almost got driven down from the left!

The social tea house was still closed. Sent a message and got to know that there was nothing this week, but would be the next. I had my laptop and the charger in my rucksack, and I had started freezing, so I thought it would make sense to stop somewhere for a coffee and some hacking. But where? I'd like a place with good toilet capacity so I could spend some time in the toilet without worrying about creating a queue. The mall by the bus terminal would be good I thought. Except, apparently I wasn't the only one to think so. It seems like a significant amount of Varna had decided it was a great idea to visit the mall this day. I was positively surprised entering the mens room seeing nobody by the sinks and nobody on the pissoars, but rounding the corner I realized I was not alone there - it was a queue for the cabins! I had better luck on the 2nd floor. Escalator full of people considering that standing two by two in the escalator is the perfect way to spend a Sunday. Ran into Costa Coffee, but change my mind very quickly observing the queue there. Back to the boat!

I've run out of clean trousers, and after sorting the laundry I think I found only one or two going into the laundry bag (and I don't have that many trousers in Oslo either), so before returning to the boat, maybe I should buy some new pants? But not in the mall! Decathlon apparently also had Sunday-open. It was also full of people, but at least they have relatively efficient self-check-out counters.

I always enter my email address when buying things from Decathlon, but why? I get nothing in return except for spam. Well, now I managed to log into their webpages. Like most modern web pages their service is built using "ajax" and I was able to easily get the full shopping history out in json format, which could be used for reconciliating the expenses in my diary.

I worked more on reconciliating credit card transactions in the diary. I also logged into the portal of the "remember" credit card. They offered to download three months of transaction listings in Excel-format in each batch - and I was not allowed to enter 01-01-2024 - 01-04-2024, I had to do 01-01-2024 - 28-02-2024 ... duh. It would take a long time to download everything. But the transaction listing was downloaded interactively for online display - and yes, it was trivial to get out also the Remember transactions in json format!

So I got late to bed again, doing nothing really useful.

### Maintenance

Did I do anything? At least some thinking ...

## Monday 2026-01-19

I heated up the aft cabin slightly using the fan-oven (on the "I"-setting, 500W?) for many hours before going to bed. Since it's noisy, I turned it off when going to bed. I woke up during the night freezing like a lot, so I got halfly out of the bed and turned on the heater - but since it was dark I didn't turn on the heat, only the fan! Apparently it did have some placebo-effect, because I didn't freeze that much for the rest of the night.

1C in the upper saloon when I got up.

Anatoli came around 10:30 (12C in the saloon by then) and helped with preparing for the maintenance - and maintenance. We got a lot more covered than planned. My request was basically just to help moving things from the fore cabin down to the ground and moving the rudder up to the forecabin so the forecabin could be used as a workshop. However, I realized it was needed to work a bit with the angle grinder on the rudder before taking it indoors. This grew into a bit more work than expected as the angle grinders I have are quite worn out and as the the flapdisk on the angle grinder was completely worn out. On the list of things to be done was also to drill a bigger hole in the plank above the rudder. Performing it is basically a one-man-job, but thinking and figuring out how it's best to get it done is a two-man job. The inventory system proved to be very useful whenever we needed some tools.

I found one heater in the bow truster battery room.

## Thursday 2026-01-22

Definitively getting mild. I sent a message querying about water, I'll get it tomrrow at 11 I was told.

Almost 100G of data used this month! It's a crisis, when it reaches 100G I'll be offline!

Got my part from Jefa

Visited Niko, got wi-fi, a shower, food, and met his mother.

Pub evening. It was enjoyable, lots of people there. People wanted to come for my dinner - the only problem is that if everybody that is invited and has told that they will show up actually is going to show up, then it will be really crowded!

## Friday 2026-01-23

Sløsedag! Spending lots and lots of water (but I was not careful enough emptying the chloridated tank, still quite much smell and taste of chlorine from the sb side water), lots of hot water, lots of heat, lots of dishwashing soap and lots of soda.

Filled up lots of bottles of filtered water, to have more reserves next time. Also found quite some old bottles of drinking water.

Had an accident, apparently I have forgotten to close the water line going to the toilet. Filling the water very full and very slowly, the toilet was overrunning! I need to make some fix, it's not supposed to leak water when the pump is not running. Quite some water in the

The storage space under the bottom drawer got wet, partly from previous accident, but probably quite much of the water came from the bathroom now. It has to dry before I can put things back.

Forgot to eat. Busy sorting filling water, sorting inventory and whatnot.

* Observation: Water tanks are indeed leaking :-( :-( :-( When the tanks are nearly empty, it's possible to suck infinite amount of air now, from both sides. The bilge pump started working again in the evening. How to figure out where it's leaking? It's like a never-ending story, I've had problems with this for almost 11 years now.

## Saturday 2026-01-24

People are invited for pinnekjøtt ... I've indicated that it should be ready around 18 in the invitation. Panic, panic, as the boat is still very messy.

The food did not become quite as I had intended it to be, but people enjoyed it. It was a good athmosphere. Eventually I managed to clean up decently well. I certainly got a bit too much beer to drink.

What I did with the food:

* The meat had been standing for 30 hours in water, but the water wasn't replaced. Well, one of the guests asked for salt, so it can't have been too salty.
* I started too late with the food preparation, and it took me longer time than expected
* First I damped the vegetables for the rutabaga-free rutabaga mash (kålrabifri kålrabistappe). I used sweet potatoes as a replacement for the rutabaga. I had no idea that there existed such a thing as a red sweet potato. The mash got a quite fancy color from this.
* When damping the vegetables, I reused water from the watering-out of the meat. That was just an idea I had, that this water probably contained quite some taste from the meat. I've never heard about anyone doing this, so probably it's not a good idea.
* I continued using the same water for the meat.
* I read that it should be possible to leave the potatoes in the water - so I did. Weird thing.
* There was too much water in total - so when I opened the pot I found that quite some of the meat had been boiled instead of damped
* The meat could have been damped for a bit longer

Guests brought far too much beer with them, and I did regret drinking that much the day after.

### Embarkments and disembarkments

For the evening dinner I had one Dutch, one Lithuanian, three Norwegians, one Russian and one Finnish guest.

### Expenses

* EUR 31.05 - food - Lidl groceries (bolognese sauce, passata, milk, yogurt, sudzhuk, nutmeg, potatoes, sweet potatoes, tomatoes, onions, carrots)

### Plans

* 08:45: Get out the brompton and the battery, pump up the tires
* 09:15: Shopping! Potatoes, carrots, sweet potatoes, butter, cream ... a stool?
* Check the shaving
* 11:00: I'll need at least four hours for cleaning, and half an hour for sweeping the floors.
* 15:00: Damp the vegetables for the mush before damping the meat, so should start peeling vegetables already at 15:00
* 16:00: Should put the meat to damp the latest at 16:00
* I read a suggestion to put potatoes in the bottom of the pot. Let's go for it! (but then the potatoes should be cleaned very well)

### Maintenance

* Front tire of Eltempo was replaced with a new tube from decathlon

## Sunday 2026-01-25

"I shall never drink again" ... I've told myself that some few times.

We went to the new place Mantellini for the chat group, driven by the Turkish guy. Nice place, I will definitively get back there some day and try out their Mantas.

* Other                                      -       3.9h
### Maintenance

* Observation: aft port tank has a very small trickle-leakage by the connection for filling water. Either it's a design flaw, me not doing things good enough when installing the throughhole, or perhaps it simply needs to be tightened up better. I should empty the tanks and have a closer look. The leak that I found is very small and does not explain why the bilge pump is running several times a day, but it could be that there are similar leakages other places.

## Monday 2026-01-26

Still not the best of the days.

I had some plans both to go downtown to fix some things and to go fix my bike in the evening, but at the end I stayed at the boat al day.

I think once when I stuck my head out of the hatch the noises came from behind me - but it never came again while I was standing thee with the head out of the hatch. I tried to tighten what I could find of ropes, but no luck.
* Observation: both tanks on the port side is rather empty, and the pump is sucking air - but still it appears that it was under-pressure on the tank when I opened it up.
* Observation: Found no water around the water tanks on the port side. There was a visible leak on the aft tank, but quite small - apparently all the water from that leak is gone?
* WiP: My idea now is to try to blow/suck air into the tubes to verify that it's tight. However I do have a problem that I can't find the hose fitting to the only pump I have that can both suck and blow

## Tuesday 2026-01-27

Niko had a day off, he was going to see the dentist and various other errainds. I went there, fixed quite some bike tubes, I worked a bit online, we ordered a pizza, we got some of my laundry done, and we went to some sort of a spa hotel to bath in sulphuric hot water.

### Time Tracking

* EUR -10 - entertainment - paid for Niko as well
* EUR 7 - dining - pizza - (paid fo by Niko)
* EUR x - dining - hamburger

### Maintenance

* Observation: backstay seriously needs more tension
* Done: I've done my best patching up three bike tubes (two for eltempo and one for brompton).
* Done: front wheel on the ElTempo got replaced with one that was patched earlier
* Done: Brompton - back wheel got a patched tube (but not sure if it was any point - the wheel was flat again when checking a week later)

## Wednesday 2026-01-28

I finally found the reason why my internet quota was disappearing so fast. When using claude code, apparently the servers don't keep any state, meaning that for every ai-call the client has to send off all the current context to the server, probably sometimes tens of megabytes - and even when Claude seems to wait for user feedback or a process to complete, it's still "thinking" a bit, causing data traffic. I was going to bed yesterday without turning off the computer, claude or internet - so some few hundred megabytes was all I had left. It could have lasted for a month, if I would have had full control of the data usage, but ... no, not in 2026.

This was finally the day when I got to do most of the errainds I've been procrastinating for so long. Delivered the bike wheel to service, delivered my phone to service, but procrastinated delivering my flag to service.

I was sitting in the Mantellini place for many hours. Met several friends that came in for a Bulgarian lesson in the evening.

Back to the boat I was working a bit offline, but reading some news and stuff from the telephone. When I connected my laptop to push my latest commits the internet stopped working. Hm. It still ought to be at least hundred megabytes left?

### Time Tracking

* Breaks (food, sleep, entertainment, etc) - 10.4h
* Work                                       -       5.2h
* Open Source contributions                  -       3.5h

* Personal admin tasks                       -       0.8h
* Other                                      -       0.7h
### Maintenance

* Observation: top-filling the tanks and leaving them top-filled for an hour, and perhaps one one small drop came from the place where it was leaking a bit. I also observed a handful of very small droplets on the outside of the bag a bit more in front of the same tank, far from any outlets/inlets - possibly condensation? I think it's good enough now, so I can back up the port side and start looking into the starboard side (will leave it overnight in any case).
* Todo: the rubber O-ring on the other drinking water cap fell off and needs replacement.
* Done: delivered the broken brompton bike wheel to service (spokes was simply getting rotten and falling apart)

### Expenses

* EUR 7.50 - dining - café office at the Mantellini place
* EUR 2.75 - groceries - Kaufland (tissues, mayonnaise)
* EUR 14.52 - food - Lidl groceries (mushrooms, milk, bread, bananas, peppers, cucumbers)

## Thursday 2026-01-29

Got up from bed around 07:50 local time. My alarm clock was set quite much earlier.

The big search-for-internet day.

* Tabla - I'm pretty sure they had wifi "Tabla" last time I was there, but now - it wasn't. Bought a salad before I managed to discover that I was offline.
* The Rock'n'Roll bar - ordered a cappuccino, they did have wifi, both "Rock'n'Roll" and "Rock'n'Roll 5G" - but when asking for the password the lady said "no wifi today".
* Delta Mall - connected to the Delta Mall wifi while having a salad. It was not the best Internet. The computer crashed from thrashing (my thrash-protect not working very well those days?) when trying to run 4-5 resumed claude sessions plus caldav ftests at the same time. I decided to do a software upgrade before restarting the browser - but suddenly the download of the linux kernel almost grinded to a halt, I think I sat there for one hour waiting for the software upgrade to complete.
* The pub we were going to - my plan was to go get my bike wheel before they closed, then go to the pub, sit there with my laptop and some food waiting for people to come to the pub evening - but I spent too much time in the boat fighting with the water tanks, so in the end I went there without the laptop. Managed to get relatively early back home this time - and filled up the water tanks.

### Time Tracking

* Breaks (food, sleep, entertainment, etc) - 9.4h
* Social activities                          -       4.5h
* Work                                       -       3.5h
* Boat maintenance etc                       -       2.7h
* Chores                                     -       1.7h
* Open Source contributions                  -       1.3h
* Transport                                  -       0.5h
* Other                                      -       0.2h
### Maintenance

* Done: stripped away some more antifoul and some of the white epoxy around the rudder.
* Todo: I don't feel confident I have control of the leakages - I should probably strip the whole area to apply more epoxy and fiber.
* Done: identified a leak and thrown out a leaky water tank. It was the tank that I didn't really trust in the first place. Made a temp organization of the tubing to have three tanks instead of four on the starboard side. Removed as much water as I could from the bottom of the water tank room. Tried to dry it up a bit with the drier and the heater. Tightened all the connections (and that was really needed, many of them could easily be turned like 90 degrees). Done a stress test, filling the tanks with water again.

### Expenses

* EUR xx - dining - a salad at Tabla. Attempt on café-office, but the internet there didn't work
* EUR 2.60 - dining - cappuccino at the "rock and roll" bar. They did have a ssid "rock and roll" as well as "rock and roll 5", but when asking for the password she just said "we don't have it today". So I won't go there again!
* EUR xx - dining - a salad at the planet mall. Last attempt on café-office. Not so efficient as I had hoped for due to sluggish internet.
* EUR 22.80 - dining - a burger, two beers and some garlic breadsticks with dipping. I was not allowed to pay for my third beer - the pressure was there already before I finished my second beer. Dan eventually managed to pay for my third beer.

### Plans

* ~~Get up early in the morning, yes, early! EARLY! dammit, that's impossible.~~ - got up around 07:50, not that late, but my alarm was a lot earlier.
* ~~Do some grinding work on the boat before it starts raining~~ - yes, but came to think that I probably should do even more.
* ~~Go to the Varna tower for breakfast, coffee and internet.~~ - their internet didn't work today. And same at the Rock'n'Roll café.
* ~~Get back to the boat perhaps?~~
* ~~Pack up port side water tank room and open up on the starboard side~~
* ~~Dishwash!!~~
* Shower?
* Go downtown for picking up the bike wheel, trying to get maintenance on the flag and dinner - oupsie, forgot
* ~~Pub evening~~
* ~~Put beans in water!~~

## Friday 2026-01-30

Those days are dominated by my monthly internet quota spent (nearly completely) up. So I have to travel around and visit cafés that have open wifi.

Started the morning with some tea and a little bit of internet from my phone, just to check emails and stuff, then I headed for the same pub as yesterday as they also had breakfasts on the menu. I picked up the bike wheel that had been for repair (I'm still so very much confused with directions in Varna, made a big circle when doing so) and then up to the Mantellini place to have lunch there. It was closed, so I visited the neighbour spot, maté (I forgot to check if they had maté on the menu).

Searched for 200W small convector electric heaters at HomeMax and Praktiker, without success - ended up with two cheap standing fan-ovens from Praktiker (mistake, as it seems like they had a much better selection of fan ovens at HomeMax). This is really not what I wanted - I guess I will have to empty parts of the water tubes to reduce the number of spots where I need heating.

Dinner: I bought some horse sausage (that's what it said - but it's not much dark). Claude suggested to make "bob chorba sudzhuk". That's probably not exactly what I made, but it got tasty in the end. I added some buckwheat to it as it was very liquid and as I think it was missing some staples.

### Time Tracking

* Breaks (food, sleep, entertainment, etc) - 14.2h
* Work                                       -       3.6h
* Open Source contributions                  -       1.1h
* Personal admin tasks                       -       0.6h
* Chores                                     -       0.6h
* Transport                                  -       0.6h
* Other                                      -       0.4h
### Plans

* ~~Go downtown relatively early, eat breakfast and have Internet maybe at the same place as yesterday~~
* ~~Pick up bike wheel~~
* ~~Final inspection that it's no obvious leakages on the starboard side~~ before packing up the room - started packing it up, but there is a leakage on the temp blinding of the inlet tube, any pressure on the water tanks now may cause some drops of water to leak out in the room.

### Expenses

* EUR 13.80 - dining - café office with breakfast and 2 cappuccinos
* EUR 11 - dining - café office with lunch and 1 cappuccino
* EUR 24 - maintenance - bike repair (new spokes for the brompton fore wheel - the old spokes simply started breaking, probably due to prolonged storage in moist and salty conditions)
* EUR 29.98 - equipment - praktiker, two new fan-ovens. Standing models, very cheap. I should rather have been buying what I found at Homemax ... but what I really wanted was small 200W convection-ovens, couldn't find that anywhere. (I found it finally - it's in Oslo)

### Maintenance

* Observation: in the aft cabin, just some 20-30 cm behind the door, a bit to the left, there is a small pool on the floor - but I haven't figured out yet where the water is coming from.
* Observation: still some water spill by the water tanks, but I think it's because the temporary "blinding" of the extra inlet tube is leaky.
* WiP: wanted to pack down all the things that should be by the water tank, but when applying pressure to the water tank, it starts leaking a bit from the "blinding" of the inlet tube. So it's needed to spend some water before I can fill that room.

## Saturday 2026-01-31

The great café-office day! Left the boat relatively early and stayed downtown until around midnight.

### Maintenance

* Observation: the water tank I tossed out may not be completely leaky anyway. I discovered that the tube-connection that was leaking is actually a screw-coupling with a rubber seal. This should be investigated more before ordering a new tank. Unfortunately I discovered and came to think of this only after the water was closed for another round of frosty weather.

### Plans

ja

### Expenses

Lots café office throughout tthe day - but I think most of it was paid by credit card. Except for the second last beer. The last beer (which I probably shouldn't have drunk) was purchased by Alif.

* EUR xx - dining - pizza, café office in "the key" pizzeria
* EUR xx - dining - black coffee, café office in "the key" beer pub
* EUR xx - dining - cesarian salad and cappuccino, café office in "Familia", the russian pub
* EUR xx - dining - another salad, café office in a more fancy place
* EUR xx - dining - three beers plus garlic bread, café office plus social at the same pub as Thursday and Friday
* EUR 4 - dining - one beer from Mike's winter palace

## Sunday 2026-02-01

Went for a Sunday sea garden walk with Dan and other people. Dan is a bit troubled after ending up in a brawl on Friday. Some guy was pushing him and he instinctively defended himself by punching the other guy in the face - so now he has two problems, he does not feel safe because he has enemies in Varna (and is going to buy a pepper spray for self-defence purposes), and he feels bad because of the punch. He had taken care to report the incident to the police. There was a suggestion to reach out to his "enemies" while they were sober, perhaps a good idea, but takes quite some couage to do that.

### Time Tracking

* Breaks (food, sleep, entertainment, etc) - 8.9h
* Open Source contributions                  -       6.5h
* Social activities                          -       4.7h
* Personal admin tasks                       -       1.5h
* Work                                       -       1.2h
* Chores                                     -       0.7h
* Boat maintenance etc                       -       0.1h
* Other                                      -       0.4h
### Maintenance

* Observation: water under the left (fore) upper watertank on the starboard side. Possibly residue from the leak from the "blinded" inlet tube?

### Plans

* Should clean up the boat
* Empty water from the battery room
* Start preparing for my departure

## Monday 2026-02-02

### Time Tracking

* Breaks (food, sleep, entertainment, etc) - 7.7h
* Transport                                  -       4.6h
* Open Source contributions                  -       3.4h
* Work                                       -       2.8h
* Chores                                     -       2.8h
* Boat maintenance etc                       -       1.8h
* Personal admin tasks                       -       0.3h
* Social activities                          -       0.0h
* Other                                      -       0.6h
### Maintenance

* Observation: after one week+ of no usage, the Brompton back tire is flat, while the Brompton front tire still feels like it has sufficient pressure.
* WiP: I had a plan to install a T-connection, a stopcock and a piece of tube between the water pump and the water tank stopcocks, partly to be able to "bleed" out air from the system when needed, and partly for emptying the water pipes for the bathrooms. The latter is obviously not going to work out very well since it's both at the wrong side of the water pump as well as wrong side of the water tank. It's also difficult to get the hose off the hose fitting. I will procrastinate this project and find some other way of emptying the tubes.
* Done: mopped up water from the starboard side of the "tube storage room", didn't bother dealing with the port side (much smaller basin, for one thing)

### Plans

* Clean up the boat (since I didn't do it yesterday)
* ~~Open up the bed. Empty the water bucket~~. 0.5h
* ~~Check, verify and update the fridge inventory 0.5h~~ - no, I just had a brief look
* ~~It's needed to clean up in the cockpit and under the boat ... 2h~~
  * ~~Put something heavy on the top of the mat protecting my bedroom from becoming wet~~ - not something really heavy, but possibly better than nothing
  * ~~madresses goes up into the cockpit. Same with laundry~~
  * The madrass that hasn't been undressed yet needs undressing
  * ~~Bike should be taken up~~
  * It would be nice to tie up the sails to prevent the cats from peeing into it.
* Packing 0.5h
  * passport, headphones, laptop, telephone, some clothes, anything else?
* Empty water tubes. Try to install the T-piece and a stopcock to "ventilate" air from the water tubes, as well as for emptying the system for water. 1h ~~tried my best~~
* ~~Install heaters in strategic places 0.5h~~
  * ~~Bottom of engine room~~
  * ~~under water installations~~
  * in the cabins ... why?
  * ~~in the saloon~~
  * ~~Removed water tank~~
  * Port side water tanks ... no, let's hope for the best
* Purchases and picking up cellphone 2h ... AAARGH!
  * ... todo ...i
  *
* Get to the airport

## Tuesday 2026-03-03

Arrived probably around 01:30 local time. The guard was nowhere to be seen, despite the gate flooded by the headlights of the taxi.

Spent quite some time before I managed to get to bed. The bed needed to be made, luckily the bedclothes was readily available, I just didn't have the energy to search for clean bedclothes and apply to the bed.

Was kept partially awake from the alarm in the upper saloon, set at 06:08 - even if I normally don't wake up from the phone when it's in the upper saloon. I could hear the vibrations despite the phone being located in the sofa.

My first priority for the day was to get out the v3.0-release of caldav, the second priority was to go to Lidl and buy food for breakfast. Unfortunately the first task took pretty much the whole day, so I didn't manage to get out while it was daylight. I asked Claude for help with the dinner and it suggested a "vegan red lentils spaghetti bolognese ragù" or something like that ... with chicken buljon and milk. I deviated a bit from the suggested receipt. It got pretty good.

Warm in the daytime, slightly cold in the morning and evening, my nose got running quite much in the evening. I managed quite fine without using the woolen undertrouser. 200W heating is not much, but when it's under my feet it helps quite much.

### Time Tracking

* Breaks (food, sleep, entertainment, etc) - 10.0h
* Open Source contributions                  -       6.3h
* Work                                       -       3.8h
* Chores                                     -       1.2h
* Transport                                  -       1.1h
* Personal admin tasks                       -       1.0h
* Other/Unaccounted                          -       0.5h

### Maintenance

* Observation: The diesel heater was on during my absence, but with the lowest termostat (5C). It has probably turned on and off many times. 7C in the boat when I arrived. I tried to crank up the termostat, but the diesel heater seemed completely dead. Even the fan didn't work. The display worked though. Leaving it off for ten seconds and then starting it, it was kicking into action. The fan sounded a bit like a bearing needed replacement, and the diesel pump was much more noisy than normally ... and the thing did not ignite. I need to investigate more.

### Expenses

* EUR 5 - transport - taxi from the bus station and back to the boat (cash)

## Wednesday 2026-03-04

Around 7C when I got up. Despite the 200W heater being on all night, it was colder in the saloon than in the bedroom. Oh, well, possibly I emit 100W while I'm sleeping, and the aft cabin has less surfaces, the tent probably retains some of the heat, and the backwall is kind of double layered.

For some reason I didn't use the woolen undertrouser in the morning. At some point I grabbed a blanket and threw it over the legs - it was almost instantly helping a lot - retaining most of the 200W heating.

Quite of a sudden I needed to rush to the toilet - when I got up from the sofa the pressure got even higher. It's quite far to the toilet, so it got a bit nasty.

I put my trouser to wash (I was planning to do that for a long time already - planned to try to use some soda to deal with the stains) and took a hot shower (my plan was to procrastinate it until tomorrow - but it was quite on overtime anyway). The ventilation fan in the shower works quite well indeed when the shower cabinet is "closed" with the curtains. Cold bathroom (admittedly I forgot to close the bathroom door), hot shower, looking out the RF-meter on the dehumidifier was still showing 41% for several minutes and the mirror was clear (only started to collect some dew after the shower curtain had been removed for a while).

### Time Tracking

* Breaks (food, sleep, entertainment, etc) - 9.0h
* Work                                       -       4.7h
* Open Source contributions                  -       4.4h
* Personal admin tasks                       -       2.3h

* Social activities                          -       0.1h
* Other/Unaccounted                          -       0.7h

### Expenses

* EUR 16.62 - groceries - Lidl groceries (whipping cream x3, fresh milk, UHT milk, yogurt, bread, red peppers, bananas, Roma tomatoes, pink tomatoes, onions, potatoes, carrots, garlic, lukanka)
* EUR 9.99 - personal clothes - Lidl МЪЖКИ КАРГО ПАНТ men's cargo trousers

### Plans

* work! did significantly less than 7.5 hours of real work today (but lots and lots on inventory-md, tingbok and caldav)
* ~~Invite for the whale dinner~~
* ~~Third priority: Lidl! Plus possibly lunch and café office from the tower buffet.~~
* Some furuset admin -- procrastinated
* Clean the boat! Guests on Thursday! -- I've started
* Some transactions to be made -- partly done
* Research on diesel heater -- procrastinated
* inventory-md -- worked with it - I still have photos from furuset that claude should look into, but now I'm out of credits on claude
* also: migrate claude to srv4 -- procrastinated

### Maintenance

* Observation: there were some air bubbles in the hot water system - possibly as a result of me trying to blow the water out of the tubes before departure, or perhaps there is a small leak on the hot water system.
* Observation: the tires of the eltempo was hard and nice, but the front break was not. Seems like the hydraulic system may be leaking, because now I can push the break handle all the way in (it still breaks very well, but soon it won't)

## Thursday 2026-03-05

So cold in the mornings and evenings ... an so warm during the day! I had 21C in the boat, with the hatch open. The insects are coming ... today I observed flies inside the boat and some bigger insects moving around in the grass outside. Also some smaller bugs running around in the cockpit. I hope the mosquito season won't start for a while.

Invited guests for dinner at around 18, with a goal of having the dinner ready served at 18:30. The idea was to make the stew that I allways make, but I changed my mind a bit. Most of the guests came between 18:30 and 20:00, so I didn't get any help making the food this time. There was the Thursday pub event officially starting at 20:00, I had the goal of getting there 21:00 (and Nastya was particularly keen on getting there).

I made potatoes, a sauce and fried some whale meat. In addition, one of the guests brought sauerkraut (and another brought one rice-and-bird dish and guacomole, and other guests brought potato chips ... but those things didn't fit equally well together). Experiences made:

* The "sauce" was very good and disappeared fast:
  * Used lots of butter and low temparture to sautee one onion, three small carrots, one clove of garlic, and three red peppers, did little by little in the pan and transferred everything into a separate casserolle as I considered it done.
  * In a cup, while making the above, I added some water, two cubes of chicken builjon, and crumbled pieces of dried "rødskrubb" into it
  * I threw 600ml of whipping cream into the casserolle, the cup with the mushroom/chicken buljon and put it to boil for a short time.
* The potatoes got both overboiled and underboiled. The quality was so-so, so I decided to peel them and cut away the worst of the potatoes. I made it in the pressure cooker. Mostly huge potatoes and a couple of "normal sized". The normal sized potatoes was breaking apart, while the huge potatoes was still quite hard in the middle. Maybe it's not a good idea to boil over-sized potatoes in the pressure boiler. Or perhaps the trick is to start with cold water and keep the flame low.
* I got very much surprised with the "2kg hvalbiff" from Holdbart
  * I had expected it to be presliced into "biffstykker", but it was huge 500g slabs.
  * It was still a bit frozen
* I should have sliced the meat before letting it hit the frying pan, but ... not sure why, but it wasn't done. The first piece was ripped into two pieces as I thought the meat was presliced and just frozen together in a lump. The next two pieces was fried in the frying pan with a lid. So the second piece was well-done on the outside and raw in the middle. The second piece was well-done all the way through. Actually the raw meat was better than the well-done meat.

So next time I will slice the meat, and give it some few minutes on each side, only.

We managed to get to the pub only around 22. Niko delayed us a bit, he had some meeting - but when nobody showed up, we went to town without him. He came quite much later there, while the rest of us was leaving.

### Plans

Initially I had plans to start the maintenance today ... but at least I should prepare properly, so I can get started tomorrow. Unless someone (that would probably be Nico - Nastya and Alif was discussing doing something in the weekend, but that probably does not involve me) pulls me into some weekend activities.

## Saturday 2026-03-07

My plan was to absolutely start with maintenance today. Oh well. Only around midnight I managed to apply the first covering of epoxy on the rudder. That Tingbok project (and a bit of inventory-md and a bit of caldav) is nearly taking up all of my time as well as all of my Claude credits. Is it a brain bug of mine, or is it useful? I keep thinking it's almost complete and I can drop the ball and concentrate on other things - but new bugs and mis-alignments with my vision is creeping up, the TODO-list is like never getting smaller.

Niko came for a visit, and we had lunch together. The plan was to do the mast climbing. I went to the shop and bought thin ropes as I'm more or less out of it on the boat - the idea is to attach many small nuts to a thin rope and then let it fall down the mast so it can be picked up at the bottom - and later use the same rope to pull a thicker rope through. However, it was a bit windy and Niko wasn't feeling very well, so it's procrastinated.

### Expenses

* EUR 14.43 - groceries - Lidl (yogurt, milk x2, babek sliced meat, bread, tomatoes, salad, green peppers, dental floss, toothpaste)
* EUR 9.06 - boat - Praktiker (polyester rope 3mm, Duraline cord 0.6mm×200m)

### Maintenance

* WiP: added EF-80 epoxy to the bottom of the rudder. Left the heat on during the night. Rudder idea looks like this:
  * The broken surface should be filled up with epoxy and chopped glass fibers, both for ensuring it's water-proof and for solidity.
  * Then we pad on small horizontal pieces of cardridge, held in place by epoxy. The purpose is to fill up the empty space and provide some scaffolding - air gaps is perfectly OK as long as everything is waterproof. It doesn't need to be very sturdy. The sturdyness is provided by the vertical layers we'll add on the outside later. It's also no point to make it too sturdy - sooner or later I'll bang the rudder hard towards a rock again, it's better that the bottom pieces of the rudder breaks off than destroying the full rudder.
  * Probably it will be needed to do some grinding before we can start with the vertical layers. Probably I should take the rudder out again. It's getting warmer in the air. But as for now, a small closed room and the fan oven makes it easy to cure the epoxy fast and well. It's going to be very nasty to do any grinding in that closed space.

## Sunday 2026-03-08

I did have a plan to get downtown for the weekly talk event, comparing a man and a woman as two wings of a bird. Suddenly I came to remember that it was at 16 and not at 17 - and then the local time was already well past 15, I was in the middle of an epoxy project and I also had on my list to take a shower before going downtown. Oh well ...

There is one advantage with the cold and with my current setup, working with epoxy in the front cabin - during the evenings, night and morning I can mix the epoxy in the saloon, store it in the cockpit and have heating on in the front cabin. The epoxy cures fast with the heat, I don't have to stress that much using all the epoxy before it goes stale, and I can even do multiple layers or rounds using the same epoxy.

The bad news is that I'm running out of epoxy.

### Maintenance

* WiP: Rudder rebuilding. Why fill it with anything at all? Why not just have it hollow - with some minimal scaffolding, only? I started building some "wings" at each side of the rudder

## Monday 2026-03-09

The day disappeared very fast, as always. Another rabbit hole: https://github.com/tobixen/etherpad-alternative

I did a trip to the local epoxy shop. I'm a bit shocked that the local "expoy shop" had only one kind of epoxy in the shelves, it does not give me a warm and fuzzy feeling, and he said they didn't have any epoxy for winter usage, only polyester.

No epoxy work done today - but some thinking and planning.

In the afternoon I felt really drowsy, sitting by the laptop - for some time I was doing nothing, just wanting to sleep. Well, why not - over the last few days I've slept much less than my daily 8 hours - and it was dawn anyway, so I decided to brush my teeth and go to bed. And then of course, couldn't fall asleep for a while.

## Tuesday 2025-03-10

Got up around 02 already. Started working with epoxy.

A major disaster at work at 12:30. Very annoying.

Nico came in the evening to help with mast works. He came just by sunset, so we had to work in the darkness.

### Maintenance

* Observation: cold epoxy gets really viscous, difficult to mix properly and difficult to work with. My approach to utilize the low temperatures for maximizing the time available for working with mixed epoxy seems not to be recommended - but I do have quite some low-viscous epoxy in the storage, probably I should utilize that,.
* Done: unclogged the bathroom sink. No idea what happened there, but the clogging was quite high on the tube. Toothpaste and soap had made it really messy. I first tried to flush it with acid, when I pushed a steel wire into the hole ... and whosh, suddenly it was all open.
* WiP: rudder work. I'm getting a better and better idea on how to proceed. I'm now using the HP-E45KL epoxy. I'm preparing pieces in the upper saloon, then assembling it in the front cabin.
* WiP: Mast work: put the old staysail halyard back in place. We still have the genoa halyard. And the old staysail halyard was not replaced - but maybe it's not needed, all the wear was at the top of the rope anyway.
* WiP: playing a bit with epoxy and glass fibre under the new bathroom floor hatch again

* EUR 29.64 - groceries - Lidl (veal, spinach, kashkaval cheese, yogurt, milk, babek sliced meat, tomatoes, lemons, bananas, baguettes x2, bread, pecan nuts, cashews salted, cashews natural)

### Maintenance

* WiP: Continued the rudder epoxying project, now with low-viscosity epoxy - it seems to work better. Some of the work I was doing earlier under too low temperatures have already started delaminating

## Thursday 2026-03-12

Even some of the work done with the low-viscosity epoxy is delaminating. I think the issue is with the "spacer" material I'm using. The epoxy is not always sticking very well to it - at least not in cold temperatures - or maybe I didn't use sufficient amounts of epoxy. The first piece I made as good, then in the temperated room, with more than enough epoxy in the box, and a headlight allowing me to see clear was surprised on how much epoxy I needed for the foam for the first piece I did - then with headlight allowing me to see clearly weather and in the temperatured room ). The last piece I made which I put under pressure while the epoxy was curing turned out perfect.

I was too slow - again. My plan was to take a shower, fix the hair, get early downtown, have some café office before the pub event ... but nah. I took a rushed shower (oups, ran out of water while I was full of soap - had to go and switch the water tanks), biked downtown and got there around 21:30. I had two beers and biked home again.

### Maintenance

## Friday 2026-03-13

Cooking went slightly wrong - again. I should have read all of the receipe (it did say "serve with rice" at the bottom, but forgot to mention that I should find the rice and boil it further up in the receipe) before starting. While I was in the middle of the process, I said to myself: "no staples? How can be? I'll add some buckwheat!". I don't think the buckwheat was much fitting. But the worst mistakes of them all was to add far too much lentils and too little water. Not only did it become so dry it was almost unedible, but it also got quite burnt in the bottom.

### Maintenance

## Sunday 2026-03-15

Woke up really early - but closed my eyes and continued sleeping. Oh well, I was up quite early anyway and managed to continue a bit on the rudder project.

Went out for the walk in the sea garden with Dan - except, Dan was not feeling well and did not participate. It was a very warm day with sunshine, I was sweating, but some of the others were wearing jackets, and even hat and gloves. The park was very much crowded, everyone was out to enjoy the good weather. I should have brought swimwear and towel. The iranian woman said the same.

Last year I was told that I should remove the bracelet once seeing a stork. Now I got told that I could take it off when seeing a stork, when seeing trees blossom or if May would come first. There were lots of trees blossoming in the park, so I removed the bracelet.

Tried to get early to bed, but failed. I did have some computer tasks I wanted to get done with before going to bed (new releases of caldav-library, caldav-server-tester and plann ... the latter seems to need more work). My plan was also to make everything ready for epoxy works in the early morning - but eventually I decided to also do the epoxying before going to bed, so I got very late to bed, a bit past 3 local time.

## Monday 2026-03-16

I did wake up at some point in the night freezing a bit, thinking that the night was extraordinary cold. It's strange, I didn't have problems sleeping in the cold when I was younger - or perhaps a good winter douvet or sleeping bag is just more efficient than my double summer douvet arrangement? I woke up very early, just around daybreak, my mind was alerting me that I had some epoxy work to be done in the early morning ... or did I? I decided (rightly!) not to bother with it, and closed my eyes again and slept for some more hours. I had a feeling it was much warmer when I woke up next time, but I'm not sure it was real - the sun didn't get that much time to heat up the aft cabin. My alarm was set to 08:46 due to my day duty, I woke up some minutes before that, took over the duty through my phone and relaxed a bit more - got up probably around 09:15 local time.

Nico came by in the evening - he had planned to come during the daylight hours to help getting up to the top of the mast. He came with some take-away-food which had become completely cold while he was stuck in traffic jams. Dropped off equipment and promised to come by during the daylight hours some other day. I need to find the correct halyard rope.

## Tuesday 2026-03-17

I wonder if the toilets are being emptied and cleaned on certain weekdays. It matters, because usually the toilet paper runs out before the cleaning. If I have a good reason to believe it's out of toilet paper, then I should bring my own roll there. However, if the toilet has just been cleaned there will be two rolls there, and I have to take my roll back again, I would like to avoid that. So today, on a Tuesday early morning, it was fresh and cleaned. Let's check it up again next Tuesday.

Got out of the boat around 14:15, with some few missions: sign the contract papers extending the rent until medio-may, pick up my laundry from Indre and Harrow. They complained about the textiles and socks - they were stinking oily, and they had to clean to washing machine after the laundry. I can't remember to have used the textiles for anyhting bad enough to make such a mess.

I also visited the Mantioli place, had a chat with the guy there, bought some food and got lots of tea. Few customers, I wonder how they keep it going around.

## Sunday 2026-03-22

I reached out to Dan to ask for the Sunday walk - yet another time, in the sea garden. I skipped it, I feel we've been doing that walk for quite many times recently. Instead, I biked a bit up the hills. Lots of barking dogs, some of them lose, cars honking on me, cars driving fast on the better roads, garbage floating around, cold, a bit of rain in the air ... but it was a nice trip anyway, flowers blooming, trees blooming, nice views (despite the grey weather).

### Time Tracking

### Expenses

* EUR 14.34 - food - Lidl groceries (chicken fillet, lukanka, babek, parsley, tomatoes, bread)
* EUR 6.00 - boat - Praktiker (spatula 28cm, paint brushes 30mm×3, 40mm×2)
* EUR 6.00 - boat - Praktiker (Ciret spatula 28cm, Antares brushes: 30mm×3 + 40mm×2)

### Maintenance

* Observation: There are A LOT of big cracks in the varnish on the "front panel" in front of the fore cabin hatch. It's almost always been a problems with cracks here, but this time much more than befgore. Obviously there is moist wanting to get out, but where does it all come from? The answer cannot be "from rain water slipping in through the cracks", I put lots of layers of varnish here previous year.
* Observation: Cracks in the varnish under the window.
* WiP: The boat has been staying in dry weather now for quite some time, so probably I should just varnish all the small bits with cracked/missing varnish - but I have no time for it now, the weather hasn't been favorable for varnishing for quite some time now, and yesterday it was raining a bit - so now it needs to dry again. I'm going over now and putting some folded tape above every crack, allowing it to continue drying, but hopefully preventing rain water from directly running into the cracks.

## Monday 2026-03-23

Not a very good day at job, doing mistakes and bad assumptions and forgettng basic knowledge all the way. But at least I did manage to do significant amount of billed work

### Time Tracking

* Other/Unaccounted                          -       0.7h

### Maintenance

* Observation: the 15-minute low-viscous epoxy lasts for around one hour at ~10C.
* WiP: Tried to smoothen out the uneven rudder surfaces with epoxy mixed with small pieces of cardboard. That was probably not a good idea.
* Done: reintroduced the genoa halyard. There is one more block for yet another rope up there, but nowhere for the rope to get out in the bottom of the mast.
* WiP: turned the rudder around again ... a bit more epoxy and glass, and it's ready for being taken out - and perfected during May.

## Tuesday 2026-03-24

I made lunch. It was supposed to be dinner Monday, food was purchased Sunday and chickpeas put to soak ... but I never got started with it. Chickpeas should be soaked for 8-12 hours, and not more than 24 hours - more than 36 hours had passed before I finally managed to put them to boil. At least the "room temperature" was around 11C most of the time, so it's probably OK.

### Time Tracking

* Breaks (food, sleep, entertainment, etc) - 10.7h

## Wednesday 2026-03-25

I managed to get early to bed.

### Maintenance

* WiP: Got up really early in the morning - well before seven - temperature down to 9C - and started doing epoxy works already before having my first cup of tea. Temperature was rising rapidly though, it was 14C when I was done. I probably did a mistake, mixing new epoxy into the same box and using the same brush without cleaning - my second mix of epoxy was starting to go off before I was completely done with it.
* WiP: working on the floor hatch in the front cabin. The hatch is only supported from the port/sb side, it's not supported in front or behind, so I will make two small supports for it in glass fibre, and try to glue it in place with epoxy. In addition I'll try to stiffen/reinforce the floor hatch with some glass fibre on the underside. I decided to make a Z-shaped support structure, because that's what I considered to work the best. Luckily it will not be visible - the Z has sort of become appropriated, not unlike the swastika.

## Thursday 2026-03-26

Stayed in bed for more than Got up a bit after 6. 6C in the saloon. Perfect day for mixing a lot of epoxy and do a lot of work with it, without risking that the mix would get stiff. However, not much work to be done. I was considering to apply some epoxy putty to level out the rudder work a bit, and then two more pieces of glass - but measuring this side, it seems like it's rather needed to remove than add material. So I'll take it out and work with the grinder before applying more epoxy. That's work for May.

I ran out of water just as I was starting with the dishwash. And I also wanted to take a shower - probably a week since last time, I've been playing a lot with epoxy works and glass fibre since then, and not cared much about personal hygiene, there is the pub evening, and I was invited for the restaurant as well. When I tried to refill the water tanks, there was no water in the land tap. There was a pool under it, so someone must have been using the water recently. I sent a message to the master, and got informed that the water will be turned on tomorrow. Oh noes, what do I do? Luckily I was allowed to take a shower at Harrow adn Indre.

I was intending to get a sail delivered to "Quantum sails". I have it as a philosophy that communication issues almost always stems from both the sides of the conversation not being clever enough. From my sid the timing between the messages was indeed a bit long, with one message per day, and holding back the information that I would be in Oslo for a month. The other part probably was too busy writing more information:

> me: Hi, I got you recommended from Petar Georgiev. I have two sails in need of maintenance (a big genoa and a smaller staysail - both needs some sewing repairs done). Could you help me with that?
> me: (The boat is up on the hard dry land - will not put it to sea until mid-May, so there is no rush - but I don't want to end up desperately searching for help in the last moment)
> Pavel: Hi Tobias, no problem welcome any time
> me: Do you have a workshop? What's the address?
> Pavel: (google maps link to Quantum Sails, on the island, channel waterfront)
> me: I'm on my way with the stay sail.
> Pavel: I am just leaving for bourgas did not know you were coming
> Ok just give me call 1 day prior

I was invited to the Happy resturant by Alif, together with Nastya, Happyness, Niko (who didn't come because of work), Mikal (who came late because of work) and Martin.

Martin left early as he was sort of a host on the Thursday pub event on "Zero Zero biljard & bar", Happyness went early as she was going to do some dancing somewhere else before going to the pub event. The rest of the crowd went by taxi. I went biking - but got delayed, some hooker was trying hard to offer me a deal, I sort of had to negotiate just to get going. 40 EUR she wanted, hotel room included.

I was a bit bored at some points during the evening, but all in all it was a very nice evening. 5 beers totally, Alif paid for the resturant, Mikal paid for the beer at zero-zero. I was expecting money to my EUR-account previous week already, actually the money had most likely already arrived to my account, but according to the payment overview that I've been eagerly reloading for several weeks now it was still not paid out, so I believed I was broke.

A bit of tummy problems, possibly after eating the chickpea stew for several days. Three toilet visits. I was expecting to be able to procrastinate the last one until the morning, but suddenly I had to run fast for the toilet.

## Friday 2026-03-27

Another toilet visit in the morning. I was a bit concerned for the long bus ride, but that seems like it was the end of it.

Decided to do some shopping for exports from Lidl. Walked by feet there, sweating excessively. Got a bit overloaded in the end, difficult to fit everything in the rucksack and pockets. I bought some bananas that I inteded to eat relatively quickly - they fell on the floor several times until I managed to eat them.

While I was walking to Lidl, I checked my account - and I had money there, hurray! It was a bit unexpected. A shame that I didn't check my account earlier.

Feeling quite rich and a bit time-stressed I took the bus some few stops from Lidl to the Grand Mall and even paid a full-fare ticket for it. And a "breakfast menu" on the coffee shop (I needd some few minutes online with the laptop).

Traffic jams due to road maintenance work on the "friendship bridge". We had to show passports on both sides of the bridge.

### Plans

Thursday is the only day left now! Everything has to be done Thursday!

* ~~Last round of epoxy (1 hour)~~
* Sails? Can we manage to deliver then to the island ... by bike? (3 hours)
* Cleanup!!  Start packing - ~5 hours?
  * laptop
  * passport
  * charger
  * clothes
  * 2 phones
  * headphones
* Clean the deck ~30 mins
* Check for fresh water leakages ~1 hour
* Shopping? ~1 hour
* Get the rudder out of the boat (may be procrastinated)
* Bestille påskebilletter? (1 hour - may be procrastinated)
* Pub! (3 hours)
* Hoist the bike ~30 mins

## Monday 2026-04-27

Arrived from Oslo in the morning.

Despite sleeping relatively long (7 hours?) in a hotel in Ruse, and in addition napping most of the way on the train from Ruse to Varna, I was still sleepy and spent some of the time napping. I also read through the book that I started on when taking the plane. Everything considered, a lazy do-nothing-day. Managed to fill the port side water tank, if nothing else. The port tank is leaking (and I need to investigate it) and on the starboard side I should add the missing tank.

### Expenses

* EUR 17.15 - food - Kaufland groceries (milk, tomatoes, noodles, yogurt, mayo, lukanka, bread, bananas)

### Maintenance

* observation: the electrical heater elements in the hot water tank is broken - fuse goes every time the hot water tank is plugged in.
* observation: the boat smells really a lot, the Solveig-smell. Is it always that smelly and I get used to it after staying for a while, or is it due to the boat being closed for a longer time with relatively high temperatures in the daytime? And what is the smell?

## Tuesday 2026-04-28

Another do-nothing-day, except work, work, work ...

### Time Tracking

* Breaks (food, sleep, entertainment, etc) - 10.1h

## Wednesday 2026-04-29

Working all day. Eating lots of bread.

Tried to get to the sail repair man, but first I was spending too much time getting out of the boat, then I spent too much time getting the sail packed to the bike. I should have checked the map in advance - I ended up stuck on the Asparuhov bridge, had to bike all the way across the lake and then a big circle and back again - and then I spent even more time searching for the place on the island. When I arrived the man was gone. At least I managed to leave the small sail there.

I was sort of stuck with evening duty at the petrol station by Lidl for quite some time.

### Expenses

* EUR 37.82 - food - Lidl groceries (passata, rice, pasta, lentils, beans, pesto, milk, cream, vegetables)
* EUR 5.04 - food - Lidl beer (12x Astika)

### Plans

* Varnishing in the early morning, since it's going to rain - I just had a look at the window in the saloon, it was all covered with humidity from the outside, so no point - and then it got too windy during the day.
* Cleanup boat - not started yet
* Visit the sailmaker with the small jib - I was too late - but at least I've delivered it
* Solar panels - procrastinated
* Work! - done quite a lot.

### Maintenance

* Observation: The back tire of the eltempo bike needs more pressure
* Observation: The handlebar of the eltempo feels a bit unstable

## Thursday 2026-04-30

Very slow morning, as always ... but I was dealing with relatively important work-tasks, so that's OK. I was also very slow to invite guests for the dinner. And slow cleaning the boat - but it was not too bad when guests came.

Deyan and his son was the first to come. Anatolyio was the only other to come, but he unfortunately came just as Deyan was leaving. The food was cold. I also planned to get a lift with Deyan downtown to visit the pub. It was already late, I was lazy, dishwash to be done, evening duty until 21 local time, raining, bike without charge (and with need for air in the back tire), so I skipped the CS pub meeting.

I found the textiles I had blamed Nico for discarding!

There was a lady on some Russian-langauge Telegram channel announcing that she would go for a hike starting with a train ride at 10:45, I was a bit tempted to go ... but I have lots of things to do, and Deyan promised to help me with transportation of gas baloons today.

## Friday 2026-05-01

Slept a lot, got up very late (around 11), spent most of the day at the laptop, doing ... what?

I have a black T-shirt that now smells ... I don't know what it is, but I've encountered it many times with clothes that has been lying around for too long, perhaps from dust mites? The smell has been hard to wash away, but I would feel inclined to believe soaking it in 90C water would do the trick. I did not succeed much with the cleaning operation. I was afraid of using too hot water, so I mixed some cold and hot water - probably the temperature got too low. Then I added some soda to the water - but without thinking, I added a lot. On a black T-shirt, won't that kill the color? Immediately when soaking the T-shirt in the water, the water became very black.

### Maintenance

* WiP: rudder - I got help lifting it down yesterday, and I've done some grinding today.
* Done: I added some glass fibre supports for the floor hatch in front of the fore cabin bed, however, some epoxy was sliding out and the supports got too high, making the floor hatch woobly. I had to grind quite much both on the glass fibre and the wood before the floor hatch was fitting well again. I've spent really a lot of time (and quite some epoxy and glass as well) on making a small insignificant hatch feel more steady.

## Saturday 2026-05-02

Late to bed, early up. 7C in the boat at 07:45, sun shining, 200W heater have been staying on minimum thermostat throughout the night - it kicks in at around 6C-8C. I suppose without the heater the minimum temperature was around 5C in the cabin during the night.

Spent most of my day by the computer, but also visited Lidl, worked on cleaning up the boat and moving boxes to the fore cabin, Nico helped me carrying garbage to the container.

Planned to go early to bed, but Nico paid me a visit. He was back from a romantic affair in Constanta, with driving from here to Constanta, to Balchik, back to Constanta and then back to Varna. It was draining him a bit, both time-wise, energy-wise and money-wise, and she was fed up begging her parents to do babysitting, so the relationship is probably already over. Nico is using some dating-app that costs relatively much per month. I was joking a bit that soon it would be needed to install an app and pay money for breathing too.

The guard told Nico that he could visit me for only half an hour. WTF? (but possibly because the gate would be closed)

## Sunday 2026-05-03

Went for a hike together with a crowd of (mostly?) Russian-speaking Ukrainian people - none speaking English very well. I joined the Telegram group 2025-09-07, invited by Masha (the Canadian Ukrainian old lady organizing the hike that day). The appointment was to meet at the train station 10:30 and take the train at 11:00. It was a bit awkward - at last I found one face that I recognized, the other was all unknown to me, so I joined. I misunderstood completely, I thought we were going to the rock chimneys by Beloslav at the south side of the lake - but instead we were going to the rock chimneys at the north side of the lake. I was so cock-sure, when everyone else told "to the left here, Toby!" I went straight ahead, thinking they would do a detour to follow the car road while I knew there were some stairs ahead. I waited a bit, lost one ferry, decided they probably wanted to see the shop before departure, went to the shop and bought some fruits, went back and hopped onto the ferry, but decided to leave it in the last moment. OSM shows almost nothing of interest on the north side of the lake, but Google Maps does! I sent a message asking for location, and managed to catch up with the group just as they were talking with a local and realizing they had gone in the wrong direction.

The walk to the "rock forest" was pretty long due to detours and the "tour leader" not knowing what way to go (OSM did not have very good information about roads and paths in this area, Google Map had a little bit better data).

I enjoyed the trip, particularly the downhills, but felt awkwardly like an outsider in the company.

laptop has two dead keys now, both of them used in my password. awkward. time tracking slightly broken due to that

### Expenses

* EUR 1 - tranposrt - train ticket for hike
* EUR 1 - transport - return train tickets for hike (cash)

### Maintenance

wip: water tank reinstalling project: flushed the water tank that I had yanked out with fresh water.
observation: stinking of humidity and decay in the starboard water tank and bag storage. I forgot to open it for ventilation before leaving.

## Monday 2026-05-04

I put on clothes for working with epoxy - though the epoxy work will have to wait for some more days, it's still too cold. My idea was to do some grinding on the rudder, but it's procrastinated - I discovered I need the electricity in the boat now.

I turned on heater in the starboard water tank room, both for drying up the room and for making it comfortable to work there in only t-shirt (8C in the boat when I woke up, and I don't feel like using my nice sweater while working). No laptop available, so I did some inventory/cleanup works. I was already quite warm before I felt ready for decsending into the basement.

### Expenses

* EUR 22.04 - food - Lidl groceries (pork belly, lukanka, biscuits, cucumbers, milk, cherry tomatoes, radishes, pork tins, bread)
* EUR 0.66 - food - bananas

### Maintenance

Done: I reinstalled the water tank. (The tank was ripped out earlier due to a leakage - when I had taken it all the way out of the boat, I discovered that the leakage was in a screw connection with a rubber gasket - probably it would suffice to tighten it to stop the leakage). The leakage was probably not only due to the hose fitting not being properly screwed - the surface was also a bit uneven, a production fault probably. I added a bit of teflon tape, but not much of it (I regret not adding more) in the threads for the inlet hose fitting, so the water wouldn't even get to the gasket. Green paste plus hemp under the inlet tube. cut away some cm at the inlet tube as it looked quite bad.
Observation: I found no standing water, but the hole towards the battery room was very moist. Probably there is standing water on the other side after the most recent leak.
WiP: I put the fan heater into "fan only" mode (using the heater down in that small gap for more than a minute in the row would be crazy) and put it pointing more or less directly towards the moist area. Threw in the dehumidifier plus a 200W convection heater in the room and closed it. Now the upper saloon is messed up with all the bags that usually is stored in the room, and my plan to fill up the water tanks and start dealing with the water tanks at the other side has to be procrastinated. The dehumidifier is doing nothing - there is not enough humidity to catch.

### Plans

* Morning routines - 08:00 - 09:00
  * [ ] ~~Claude activation - 5 minutes~~ laptop troubles - plus that I'm almost out of credits
  * [ ] ~~Morning exercise (?) - 15 minutes~~ - water tank maintenance work makes it all but impossible

  * [*] Emails - 30 minutes
  * [*] Time tracking and diary maintenance - 15 minutes
* [*] Put back starboard side water tank
* [ ] Solar panels

## Tuesday 2026-05-05

Chaotic day, no maintenance done?

Visit to the local hotel, trying to get a cappuccino there. I had planned to do it around lunch time, but got there only at 18. That was good timing, because the hotel resturant opened at 18, and they did not serve coffee from the reception. However, in the resturant they only had Nescoffee, so I took a beer instead. And later a salad. I went there for wifi, but the wifi was in the lobby and there was a thick brick wall between the lobby and the restaurant, so I had lots of packet loss and issues with the network connection. I ended up sitting there quite long due to a php-producing customer apparently being clueless on the SQLi-risk when mixing SQL and user input in the script and sending it directly to the database without sanitizing the inputs (IMHO, that's the wrong approach - the correct approach is to use SQL with placeholders and send parametres separately).

### Expenses

* EUR 2.50 - dining - café office with a beer
* EUR 5.50 - dining - café office with a salad

## Wednesday 2026-05-06

busy day with work

Had planned to do some grinding work, but procrastinated again.

### Maintenance

I found the problem with the upper solar panels - somehow one of the cords was completely corroded exactly in the drill hole where the cord goes into the boat. Now I'm unsure how to fix it. Replace the whole cable?

## Thursday 2026-05-07

Cold shower. My plan was to ask if I could borrow the shower somewhere, but in the end I decided to just get it done.

I enjoyed the pub evening.
